3. What Are Chocolate Chip Cookie Fries?
Chocolate Chip Cookie Fries are a fun and creative twist on traditional chocolate chip cookies. Instead of shaping the cookie dough into round cookies, the dough is cut or shaped into thin, fry-like strips and baked until the edges are lightly golden and crisp while the centers remain soft and chewy.
They have all the familiar flavors of a classic chocolate chip cookie, including buttery dough, brown sugar, vanilla, and plenty of chocolate chips. The unique fry shape makes them especially fun to serve with dipping sauces such as melted chocolate, caramel, Nutella, or vanilla glaze.
The best thing about these cookie fries is that they are simple enough for everyday baking but special enough for parties and gatherings. You can serve them on a platter with several dipping sauces, just like traditional French fries, creating a playful dessert that both kids and adults will enjoy.
Whether you’re looking for a creative party dessert, a fun afternoon snack, or a new way to enjoy your favorite chocolate chip cookies, Chocolate Chip Cookie Fries are an easy and delicious choice.
4. Ingredients You’ll Need
Making Chocolate Chip Cookie Fries requires simple, everyday baking ingredients. For the best texture, use good-quality butter and chocolate chips, and chill the dough before shaping.
For the Chocolate Chip Cookie Fries
- 2 cups (250 g) all-purpose flour
- ½ teaspoon baking soda
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ¾ cup (170 g) unsalted butter, softened
- ½ cup (100 g) brown sugar, packed
- ¼ cup (50 g) granulated sugar
- 1 large egg, at room temperature
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- ¾ cup (130 g) chocolate chips, plus extra for topping if desired
For Serving
- ½ cup chocolate sauce, for dipping
- ½ cup caramel sauce, for dipping
- ¼ cup powdered sugar, optional for dusting
- Vanilla ice cream, optional, for serving
Ingredient Notes
Butter: Softened unsalted butter gives the cookie fries a rich, buttery flavor and helps create a tender texture.
Brown Sugar: Brown sugar adds moisture and gives the cookies a deliciously soft and chewy center.
Granulated Sugar: A little white sugar helps the edges become lightly crisp and golden.
Chocolate Chips: Semi-sweet or milk chocolate chips work beautifully. You can also use mini chocolate chips for easier shaping.
Vanilla Extract: Vanilla enhances the buttery flavor and makes the chocolate taste even richer.
Chilling the Dough: Don’t skip this step. Chilling helps firm up the butter, making the dough easier to shape and helping the cookie fries hold their shape while baking.
5. How to Make Chocolate Chip Cookie Fries
Making Chocolate Chip Cookie Fries is easier than you might think. The key is to prepare a soft cookie dough, chill it well, shape it into thin fry-like strips, and bake until lightly golden around the edges.
Step 1: Prepare the Dry Ingredients
In a medium bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking soda, and salt. Set the mixture aside while you prepare the cookie dough.
Step 2: Cream the Butter and Sugars
In a large mixing bowl, beat the softened butter, brown sugar, and granulated sugar until smooth, creamy, and slightly fluffy. This usually takes about 2–3 minutes.
Step 3: Add the Egg and Vanilla
Add the egg and vanilla extract to the butter mixture. Beat until everything is well combined and smooth.
Step 4: Add the Dry Ingredients
Gradually add the flour mixture to the wet ingredients. Mix gently until a soft cookie dough forms. Avoid overmixing, as this can make the cookie fries less tender.
Step 5: Fold in the Chocolate Chips
Gently fold in the chocolate chips using a spatula or wooden spoon. Make sure they are evenly distributed throughout the dough.
Step 6: Chill the Dough
Cover the dough and refrigerate it for about 30 minutes. Chilling makes the dough easier to handle and helps the cookie fries maintain their shape during baking.
Step 7: Shape the Cookie Fries
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
Place the chilled dough between two sheets of parchment paper and gently roll it into a rectangle about ¼ inch thick. Remove the top sheet of parchment.
Using a sharp knife or pizza cutter, cut the dough into thin strips, approximately ½ inch wide and 3–4 inches long, to create the fry shape.
Carefully transfer the strips to the prepared baking sheet, leaving a little space between each one.
Step 8: Bake Until Golden
Bake the cookie fries for approximately 9–12 minutes, or until the edges are lightly golden and the centers are still slightly soft.
Be careful not to overbake them. They will continue to firm up as they cool.
Step 9: Cool and Serve
Allow the cookie fries to cool on the baking sheet for about 5 minutes, then transfer them to a wire rack to cool further.
Serve them warm or at room temperature with chocolate sauce, caramel sauce, Nutella, or vanilla ice cream for dipping.
Pro Tip
For the best texture, don’t make the strips too thin and don’t overbake them. Slightly golden edges with a soft center will give you delicious cookie fries that are crisp on the outside and chewy in the middle.
6. 7 Secrets for the Best Chocolate Chip Cookie Fries
Want your Chocolate Chip Cookie Fries to turn out golden, crisp around the edges, and soft and chewy in the center? These simple tips can make a big difference in the final texture and flavor.
1. Use Softened Butter
Use butter that is softened to room temperature rather than melted. Soft butter creams properly with the sugars and helps create a tender cookie texture. Melted butter can make the dough too loose and cause the cookie fries to spread.
2. Chill the Dough
Don’t skip the 30-minute chilling time. Chilled dough is easier to roll and cut, and it helps the cookie fries hold their shape while baking.
3. Don’t Overmix the Dough
Once you add the flour, mix just until the ingredients come together. Overmixing can develop too much gluten, resulting in cookie fries that are harder instead of soft and chewy.
4. Keep the Strips Similar in Size
Try to cut all the cookie fries into similar lengths and thicknesses. This helps them bake evenly so you don’t end up with some pieces overbaked while others are still soft.
5. Don’t Overbake
For soft and chewy cookie fries, remove them from the oven when the edges are lightly golden and the centers still look slightly soft. They will continue to firm up as they cool.
6. Choose the Right Chocolate Chips
Semi-sweet, milk, or mini chocolate chips can all work well. Mini chocolate chips are especially convenient because they distribute easily throughout the dough without making the strips difficult to cut.
7. Let Them Cool Before Serving
Allow the cookie fries to cool for a few minutes on the baking sheet before transferring them to a wire rack. This gives them time to set while keeping their centers deliciously soft.
Bonus Tip: Serve your cookie fries with two or three dipping sauces, such as warm chocolate sauce, caramel, and Nutella, to turn a simple cookie into a fun dessert experience.
7. Chocolate Chip Cookie Fries Variations
One of the best things about Chocolate Chip Cookie Fries is how easy they are to customize. Once you have the basic cookie dough, you can experiment with different chocolates, flavors, and toppings to create a new version every time.
1. Double Chocolate Cookie Fries
Add 2 tablespoons of unsweetened cocoa powder to the flour mixture and use chocolate chips for an extra-rich, chocolatey dessert.
2. White Chocolate Chip Cookie Fries
Replace some or all of the regular chocolate chips with white chocolate chips. The creamy sweetness pairs beautifully with the buttery cookie dough.
3. Peanut Butter Cookie Fries
Add ¼ cup creamy peanut butter to the dough for a delicious peanut butter and chocolate combination. You can also drizzle the finished fries with melted peanut butter.
4. Nutella Cookie Fries
Swirl ¼ cup Nutella or chocolate-hazelnut spread into the dough before shaping. Serve the finished cookie fries with extra Nutella for dipping.
5. Cinnamon Sugar Cookie Fries
Add ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon to the dough, then lightly sprinkle the baked cookie fries with cinnamon sugar while they are still warm.
6. Salted Caramel Cookie Fries
Mix a small handful of caramel bits into the dough or drizzle the finished cookie fries with caramel sauce. A tiny sprinkle of flaky sea salt adds a delicious sweet-and-salty contrast.
7. Funfetti Cookie Fries
For a colorful party version, fold ¼ cup rainbow sprinkles into the dough. These are especially fun for birthdays and celebrations.
8. Chocolate-Dipped Cookie Fries
Dip one end of each cooled cookie fry into melted chocolate, then add chopped nuts, coconut, or sprinkles. Let the chocolate set before serving.
9. S’mores Cookie Fries
Add mini chocolate chips and ¼ cup mini marshmallows to the dough, then sprinkle crushed graham crackers over the top before baking.
10. Nutty Chocolate Chip Cookie Fries
Fold ½ cup chopped walnuts, pecans, or almonds into the dough for extra crunch and a richer flavor.
Whether you prefer extra chocolate, nuts, caramel, or colorful sprinkles, these variations make it easy to create Chocolate Chip Cookie Fries for every occasion.
8. Best Dipping Sauces for Cookie Fries
The right dipping sauce can take Chocolate Chip Cookie Fries from delicious to completely irresistible. Serve two or three sauces together so everyone can choose their favorite. Here are some of the best options:
1. Warm Chocolate Sauce
A rich, silky chocolate sauce is a classic choice. Dip warm cookie fries into the sauce for an extra chocolatey dessert.
2. Caramel Sauce
Sweet and buttery caramel creates a delicious contrast with the chocolate chips and slightly crisp cookie edges.
3. Nutella
Serve Nutella at room temperature or gently warmed for an easy chocolate-hazelnut dipping sauce. It pairs especially well with soft, chewy cookie fries.
4. Vanilla Glaze
Mix powdered sugar with a little milk and vanilla extract to create a simple, creamy glaze. Its sweetness complements the buttery cookie flavor beautifully.
5. Peanut Butter Dip
Warm creamy peanut butter slightly so it becomes easy to dip. For a richer sauce, mix it with a little melted chocolate.
6. Strawberry Sauce
For a fruity twist, serve homemade or store-bought strawberry sauce alongside the cookie fries. The sweet-tart flavor balances the richness of the cookies.
7. Cream Cheese Dip
A smooth cream cheese dip adds a slightly tangy flavor that works wonderfully with sweet chocolate chip cookie fries.
8. Salted Caramel Sauce
If you enjoy sweet-and-salty desserts, salted caramel is an excellent choice. The hint of salt brings out the buttery and chocolate flavors.
9. Chocolate Peanut Butter Sauce
Combine melted chocolate with creamy peanut butter for a rich dipping sauce that tastes like a peanut butter cup.
10. Ice Cream for Dipping
For an extra-special dessert, serve Chocolate Chip Cookie Fries with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Dip the warm cookie fries directly into the softened ice cream for the ultimate combination of warm and cold textures.
Serving Tip
For parties, arrange the cookie fries on a large serving platter and place 2–3 dipping sauces in small bowls in the center. Add a scoop of ice cream, fresh berries, or a light dusting of powdered sugar to create a fun dessert platter.
9. What to Serve with Chocolate Chip Cookie Fries
Chocolate Chip Cookie Fries are delicious on their own, but serving them with the right sides and drinks can turn them into a fun and complete dessert. Whether you’re preparing them for a family treat, party, or afternoon snack, here are some delicious ideas.
1. Vanilla Ice Cream
A scoop of creamy vanilla ice cream is one of the best pairings. Serve the cookie fries warm alongside the ice cream for a delicious combination of warm, chewy cookies and cold, creamy ice cream.
2. Chocolate or Caramel Sauce
Add small bowls of warm chocolate sauce and caramel sauce for dipping. You can even serve both so everyone can choose their favorite.
3. Fresh Berries
Strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, or sliced bananas add a fresh fruity contrast to the rich and buttery cookie fries.
4. Whipped Cream
A spoonful of lightly sweetened whipped cream makes the dessert feel extra special. Add a few chocolate shavings or sprinkles on top for decoration.
5. Hot Chocolate
For a cozy dessert combination, serve cookie fries with a warm cup of hot chocolate. This is especially delicious during colder months.
6. Coffee
A cup of freshly brewed coffee pairs beautifully with the sweetness of chocolate chip cookie fries. Try them with cappuccino, latte, or a simple black coffee.
7. Milk
A cold glass of milk is a classic pairing for chocolate chip cookies and works just as well with cookie fries. It’s especially popular with kids.
8. Fresh Fruit Salad
A light fruit salad can balance the richness of the cookies while adding color and freshness to your dessert table.
9. Dessert Platter
For parties and gatherings, create a fun dessert platter with Chocolate Chip Cookie Fries, dipping sauces, fresh berries, mini marshmallows, chocolate pieces, and ice cream. It makes an attractive centerpiece and gives guests plenty of options.
10. Sprinkles and Chocolate Shavings
For a simple finishing touch, sprinkle the cookie fries with powdered sugar, colorful sprinkles, or finely grated chocolate before serving.
Serving Idea
For the most fun presentation, arrange the Chocolate Chip Cookie Fries in a serving basket or on a platter, just like traditional fries. Place small bowls of chocolate and caramel sauce alongside them and add a scoop of vanilla ice cream for dipping.
10. Are Chocolate Chip Cookie Fries Healthy?
Chocolate Chip Cookie Fries are a fun dessert rather than a health-focused food. They contain ingredients such as butter, sugar, flour, and chocolate chips, so they are best enjoyed as an occasional treat and as part of a balanced diet.
That said, homemade cookie fries give you control over the ingredients and portion sizes. You can choose good-quality chocolate, adjust the amount of sugar slightly, and avoid unnecessary additives that may be found in some packaged desserts.
How to Make Them a Little Lighter
- Reduce the sugar: You can slightly decrease the granulated sugar if you prefer a less-sweet cookie.
- Choose dark chocolate: Dark chocolate chips can provide a richer flavor with less sweetness.
- Watch the portions: Serve a reasonable portion instead of eating a large amount at once.
- Add nuts: Chopped walnuts, almonds, or pecans can add texture and some protein and healthy fats.
- Serve with fruit: Fresh strawberries, blueberries, or bananas can add natural sweetness and freshness.
- Go easy on dipping sauces: Chocolate, caramel, and other sauces can significantly increase the overall sugar and calorie content.
Enjoy Them in Moderation
There is no need to avoid Chocolate Chip Cookie Fries completely. Like other cookies and desserts, they can be enjoyed occasionally as part of a varied, balanced eating pattern. Their fun shape and delicious flavor make them particularly suited to parties, celebrations, and special family treats.
11. How to Store Chocolate Chip Cookie Fries
Proper storage helps keep your Chocolate Chip Cookie Fries fresh, soft, and delicious for several days. Always allow the cookie fries to cool completely before storing them.
Room Temperature
Place the cooled cookie fries in an airtight container and keep them at room temperature in a cool, dry place. They can stay fresh for about 3–4 days.
For the best texture, place a sheet of parchment paper between layers if you are stacking them.
Refrigerator
If your kitchen is warm or you want to keep them a little longer, store the cookie fries in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 1 week. Keep them well covered to prevent them from absorbing odors or becoming dry.
Let them sit at room temperature for a few minutes or gently warm them before serving.
Freezer
For longer storage, Chocolate Chip Cookie Fries can be frozen for up to 2–3 months. Arrange completely cooled cookie fries in a freezer-safe container or zip-top freezer bag, separating layers with parchment paper.
Label the container with the date so you can easily keep track of freshness.
Storage Tip
If you plan to serve the cookie fries with chocolate, caramel, or other dipping sauces, store the sauces separately. This prevents the cookie fries from becoming soggy and helps them maintain their delicious texture.
12. How to Reheat Cookie Fries
Reheating Chocolate Chip Cookie Fries gently helps bring back their soft, chewy texture without making them dry or hard. Here are the easiest methods.
Oven Method
Preheat your oven to 300°F (150°C). Place the cookie fries on a baking sheet and warm them for about 4–6 minutes.
This method is great when you’re reheating several cookie fries at once. Let them cool for a minute or two before serving.
Air Fryer Method
Preheat the air fryer to 300°F (150°C). Place the cookie fries in a single layer and heat for approximately 2–3 minutes.
Keep a close eye on them because cookie fries are thin and can become crisp quickly.
Microwave Method
Place one or two cookie fries on a microwave-safe plate and heat for 8–12 seconds.
If they are not warm enough, continue heating in short 5-second intervals. Avoid overheating, as this can make the cookies tough.
Reheating Tip
For the best results, warm the cookie fries just until they are slightly soft and heated through. Serve immediately with warm chocolate sauce, caramel, or a scoop of vanilla ice cream for an extra delicious treat.
13. Make-Ahead Tips
Making Chocolate Chip Cookie Fries ahead of time is a great way to save time when preparing for a party, family gathering, or special occasion. You can prepare the dough in advance and bake the cookie fries whenever you’re ready.
Prepare the Dough Ahead
Prepare the cookie dough according to the recipe, then cover it tightly and refrigerate it for up to 2 days. When you’re ready to bake, let the dough sit at room temperature for a few minutes if it is too firm to roll.
Shape the Cookie Fries in Advance
For even easier preparation, roll out the chilled dough and cut it into fry-shaped strips. Place the unbaked cookie fries on a parchment-lined baking sheet, cover them well, and refrigerate for up to 24 hours.
Bake them directly from the refrigerator, adding an extra minute or two to the baking time if needed.
Freeze the Cookie Dough
You can also freeze the prepared dough for longer storage. Shape the dough into a flat rectangle, wrap it tightly in plastic wrap, and place it inside a freezer-safe bag or container. Freeze for up to 2–3 months.
Thaw the dough overnight in the refrigerator before rolling, cutting, and baking.
Freeze Baked Cookie Fries
Already-baked Chocolate Chip Cookie Fries can also be frozen. Allow them to cool completely, then place parchment paper between the layers and store them in a freezer-safe container for up to 2–3 months.
Thaw at room temperature and gently reheat before serving.
Prepare the Dipping Sauces Separately
Chocolate, caramel, and other dipping sauces can be prepared ahead and stored separately. Warm the sauce gently before serving so your cookie fries stay crisp rather than becoming soggy.
Best Make-Ahead Tip
For the freshest texture and flavor, prepare the dough ahead of time but bake the cookie fries shortly before serving. This gives you warm, golden cookie fries with soft, chewy centers when your guests arrive.
